Membership is FREE, but the rewards are PRICELESS!
The Friends of the Mt. Sterling Public Library will hold the next meeting on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 @7:00PM at the Library. The meeting is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend. We are seeking new members to attend and expand our committee meetings with fresh ideas for fundraising events. We have lots of fun while supporting the library! Come and share your talents. Make the library your favorite place to join your favorite friends!
If you are unable to attend, but would otherwise like to serve on a committe, become a member of our organization, or join in the fundraising efforts, please call the Library and provide us with your name and number to volunteer your talents, or call the President of the Friends of the Library, Linda Clemans @ 740-869-2216. We always need new friends! This is an opportunity to support your community and feel rewarded by doing so in watching our progress.
The Library staff and Friends of the Library organization would like to congratulate 2 of the Friends of the Library's members for being appointed to the recent vacancies on the Library Board of Directors: Katrina Bush and Mike Bergman. As Board members, they are no longer allowed to be a member of the Friends of the Library organization due to any possible conflict of interest. While we congratulate these fine people who continue to represent the library, we also must take this opportunity to stress to our community the need is even greater now than ever for new members to join the Friends of the Library organization. This organization was established over 4 years ago, and is nationally recognized. Currently, it is the same few people and several of the library staff members that are making these events and activities possible. Please take this opportunity to find your calling in volunteering for such an outstanding and worthy organization! A warm welcome is extended to our newly nominated Treasurer, Beverly Bobo. Bev joined the Friends group in 2009, and is eager to help out such a worthy organization. She comes to the Frieneds with many years of accouting and book keeping skills, as well as many years of volunteerism with the national organization TWIGS, where she chaired and served on several committees.
CURRENT OFFICERS
PRESIDENT: Linda Clemans
SECRETARY: Casey O'Neil

Thank You!
3rd Annual Community Yard Sale
Saturday, August 14 from 9 AM to 3 PM we held our annual event. 10x10 spaces were sold $10 each in advance. Forms were available at the library. First come, first served! This year, we had quite a turnout and combined it with the Mt. Sterling Farmer's Market, which is now held here on the library lawn. Thanks to all who participated and to those who patronized our seller's stands. Proceeds from the rental of spaces go to the Friends of the Library to help support the library programs and events.
A BIG THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO ATTENDED OUR "FRIENDS FRENZY" event at Ben & Joy's on Thursday, June 17. Free tea & pie was given to those who attended with an interest in learning how to join the Friends of the Library organization. We are very happy to have received many new potential members! A special thanks to Ben & Joy's for allowing us use of their space, and especially their tea and pie!
UPCOMING EVENTS:
The Friends organization is working on having a chair auction! This event will be comprised of having artists paint the chairs in various scenes or themes, which will then be bid on. This event is a great way to show your support for the Library and the Friends of the Library and walk away with a very unique, and special keepsake, or give it as a wonderful gift to someone else who you know would appreciate both the artistic design and the message behind it.
COMING SOON
Celebrity Auction- Date TBA
This event will be the first of it's kind hosted by the Friends of the Library. We are working on getting many big-name celebrities to donate items for our auction. Some donors to date include: Toby Keith, Allen Alda, Steffi Graph, and many more! Many items are personal to the celebrity and/or autographed. This may become an online auction through ebay, to be determined soon. If you would like to donate or help the Friends with this fundraiser, please contact the Library or come to the next Friends meeting.
Recent Activities:
2nd Annual Spaghetti Dinner - Friday, March 26, 2010
The event was held Friday, March 26 from 5-7 PM at the Mt.SterlingChurch of the Nazarene, as it was last year. Cost was $7.00 per adult, $5.00 for seniors. Dinner consisted of salad, spaghetti entree, bread, dessert and drink. Delivery was available on orders called in prior to 5:00 PM on March 26. This year we added a silent auction of themed baskets which was a big hit. All proceeds benefit library programs and materials. This was a huge success these past 2 years with most of the village participating or just joining us for a great meal, commradarie and fellowship. A BIG THANK YOU to Tracie Sampson (active member of the Friends of the Library organization) and her family for all their hard work. Tracie has cooked the spaghetti entree for the event both years. This year Tracie donated from her family's restaurant, the FREEWAY SUBSTATION, all the salad dressing and other miscellaneous items. Tracie also secured donations from her vendors for the bread and rolls (Auddino's Bakery) as well as the sauce (GFS) and plates (SWD). Also this year we were fortunate to have Jewitts IGA donate the meat for the sauce. A special thanks to the First Church of the Nazarene in Mt. Sterling for allowing us the use of their facilities for the 2nd year in a row. We would like to thank all those who volunteered their services to help in one way or another. Volunteers created the flyers and tickets and distributed them, set up the room, prepared and cooked the meal, delivered meals, collected tickets at the door, seated supporters, served, cleaned and cleared tables, washed dishes, donated desserts, money and theme baskets for the silent auction. Without the many volunteers it would not have been possible to have such a successful fundraiser.
Holiday Fashion Show Luncheon- Sunday, November 22, 2009
Our first Holiday Fashion Show and Luncheon was held on Sunday, November 22 at the BRICKHOUSE CAFE. Festivities kicked off at 1:30 PM with live musical entertainment from local musicians "Lefty and Skeeter" performing an accoustical duet of various medleys. The fashion show began at 2:00 PM. The event was held at the new BRICKHOUSE CAFE. Adult holiday fashions were provided by Dress Barn of Prime Outlets. Teen fashions were provided by Repeats of Mt. Sterling. Catering was provided by the BRICKHOUSE CAFE. There were a total of 15 door prizes donated by the following businesses : Sterling Pharmacy, Hair's the Place, The Olde Country Shoppe, Becky Martin- Longaberger, Katrina Bush, Flowers By Ralph, Sharp Cuts Plus, Cindy Hodges- Tupperware, Dress Barn-Prime Outlets, and Repeats. The following people won Door Prizes: Mary Lou Junk, Elaine Seama, Faith Simmons, Janet Fritch, Hannah Gray, Jo Newton, Margie Deyo, Keith Morgan, Sally Hammond, Connie Cash, Judy Virgalitte, Liz Satterfield, June Bergman, Jean Baxter, and Florence Reno. This event was the first we have held of it's kind to date. However, with the obvious success, we plan to do this as an annual event and possibly expand into other seasons. Tickets were $10 each and included the holiday fashion show, a light lunch, dessert, and live musical entertainment. We had a great turnout to help us support a worthy cause. This event could not have been pulled off without the many hours of planning and labor by a few key people. From creating and distributing the flyers, making the programs and tickets, decorating center pieces for the tables, to both adult and teen Models volunteering their "talents", and a few people working many hours hauling tables and chairs to and from, setting up, setting tables, decorating, and cleaning up, it was a deed worth doing. Thanks to all the members of the Friends of the Library organization for their participation and/or attendance, and especially the library staff in their dedication. A BIG THANK YOU goes to the Martin family, owners and proprietors of the Brickhouse Cafe and their servers Heather Martin, Lee Martin and Angel Monahan for all their hard work and allowing us to use their venue.
Raffle for "Violet" doll
Friends member Casey O'Neil donated a 3 foot, hand-made, prairie themed doll to be raffled off with proceeds going towards equipping the public meeting room. The tickets are sold for $5 for 6 tickets or $1 each ticket. The drawing was held on Monday, September 28. Even with the rain, Violet managed to make an appearance at the Mt. Sterling Good Ole Days festival where tickets could be purchased as well. The winner of the drawing was Julia Shipley, grand daughter of Dean Shipley.
Community Yard Sale and Farmers Market-
Saturday, September 5, 2009
On September 5, 2009 the Friends of the library and library staff collaborated with the American Legion Post 417 for their fall yard sale event. There was the addition of a Farmer's Market as well as a fish fry held by the American Legion Post 417 and concessions. The fish fry was so successful, it sold out within the first 2 hours. We look for this to be a successful annual event.
Semi-Annual Community Yard Sale- Saturday, June 6, 2009
The Friends of the Library hosted their second community yard sale since September 2008 on June 6, 2009. Though there was not as many tables as in September, the village still showed up to browse the 10 or plus tables and support the Library by purchasing from the vendors available. We also had a lot of donations once again with the proceeds benefitting the Summer Reading Program.
Spaghetti Dinner- Friday, March 27, 2009 at the Mt.SterlingChurch of the Nazarene
The Friends sold tickets for a spaghetti dinner with all the trimmings. Dinner was served at the Mt. Sterling Church of the Nazarene, located at 226 N. Market St. Tickets were $5.00 for seniors, $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 4-12, and free to children 3 and under. Serving was from 5-7 p.m. Delivery was available if called in by 5:00 p.m. on Friday. All proceeds supported the Summer Reading Program. This was by far the most successful fundraiser held to date and will most likely become an annual event. The support and attendance from the community was much more than ever anticipated in these economic times. This event took many hours of planning, setting and cleaning up, not to mention all the labor of making and serving the food and drinks. A special Thank You Words alone cannot thank those who contributed either by donation of money or food items, or driving to pick up supplies or deliver meals, to those who cooked and washed hundreds of dishes, silverware, pots and pans to those who took orders and served meals. Thank you to everyone who participated in any way. We could not have done it without each and every one of you!
Chinese Auction and Bake Sale- November, 2008
The Friends of the Library sold tickets at $1/ea. or 6/$5.00 for themed baskets with gently used and new items. The library staff assembled approximately 40 plus decorated baskets/boxed themes on display in the library for 1 month and then winning tickets were drawn. This was a great success and popular from previous years. With support from the staff at the library and the community and local bussineses making donations of the items, this will continue to be a Friends of the Library annual tradition.
Shop for a Cause- September 20, 2008- 3p-5p
The Friends sold 20% off coupons to Macy’s for $5.00 each prior to their one-day sales event. They also sold tickets at the store from 3pm to 5pm. There was also a story time in the kids department held during this time.
Community Yard Sale- September 13, 2008, 9a-4p
The Friends sold 10 x10 spaces in the empty lot for $10 each. Reservations were taken. Vendors provided tables and were allowed to bring a pop-up tent. Set up was by 9am and concluded at 4pm. 18 spaces were rented and the crowds were non-stop all day. Library staff helped in collecting, setting up and cleaning up after the event. Everyone had a great time and we all hope it becomes an annual event. In fact, it was so successful it has been discussed we may make this a spring fundraiser as well.
(Proceeds from these events helped fund our Summer Reading program and a library new sign .)
Through their fundraising efforts, the Friends of the Library have also purchased 2 new computers and a Cricut Expressions machine. The Cricut will be very useful and helpful in a variety of ways for marketing, displays and bulletin boards, craft projects in our summer reading, story time's, craft classes and numerous other programs we host. The computers are desperately needed to keep up with the increasingly busy demand on a daily basis as well as to keep us updated. The Library is very grateful to the Friends for their dedication and hard work to make these items possible, which with our ever-shrinking budget in these painful economic times would not otherwise be possible.
BAIL FOR BOOKS- 2008
Patrons, staff, and library supporters were "arrested" and put in a make-shift jail cell until they were able to secure bond by form of donations. This was a fun event that brought the community together to help donate to a worthy cause - supporting your library here in Mt.Sterling.
