Library CLOSED Monday, October 12

  • Status: It is a U.S. federal and Federal Reserve Holiday.
  • Closures: Federal offices, the bond market, and most banks are closed. Post offices have no regular mail delivery.
  • Open/Closed Vary: Schools, state government offices, and private businesses decide locally whether to close.
  • Dual Observance: Many states and cities also celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the same date to honor Native American history and culture

Ohio celebrates both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day, but the way the holiday is celebrated varies by city and county.

  • Columbus

In 2020, Columbus, Ohio renamed Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day to honor the native people of Ohio, including the Shawnee, Miami, and Wyandot.

  • Akron

Akron celebrates North American First People’s Day on the first Monday of October.

  • Cleveland

Cleveland celebrates Columbus Day with a large parade in Little Italy.

  • Other cities

Some cities in Northeast Ohio still celebrate Columbus Day, even though many Native American groups and others have called for a change.

Columbus Day was originally conceived as a celebration of Italian American heritage, but some critics say that it’s a painful reminder of the suffering of Indigenous communities.
