OSU Extension Program Discussion for Farmers & Gardeners

Tuesday, June 10 from 6-7:00 PM in the library community room. A FREE program open to the public,  Adam Shepherd, from the Fayette County OSU Extension Office, will provide information on the invasive weed Palmer amaranth.  This is a noxious weed (Amaranthus palmeri), found across the western and southern United States, and has been confirmed in Madison, Fayette, and Pickaway counties.  This weed is extremely aggressive and a prolific seed producer.  Palmer amaranth is an extremely competitive plant that can reduce yields up to 80% in soybeans, and from 11-91% in corn.  Its seeds have a relatively short short soil life at around 80% mortality in 3 years.  However, each plant can produce in the neighborhood of five hundred thousand to one million seeds.  Prolific seed productions, quick growth rate, and broad genetic diversity combine to make this weed a serious threat to farmers.  Local farmers and gardener’s should plan to attend, as this affects many of us in the community.
